Fire classifications for UK interior linings

An explanation of reaction-to-fire classification for wall and ceiling linings — and a plain statement of what we currently publish for our own products.

In short

A reaction-to-fire classification (a Euroclass, to BS EN 13501-1) grades how a lining material behaves in the early stages of a fire — flame spread, heat release and smoke — separately from fire resistance, which is about holding fire back for a period of time, as a fire door does.

Reaction to fire vs fire resistance

These are two different properties. Reaction to fire describes how a material contributes to a fire growing and spreading — relevant to wall and ceiling linings. Fire resistance describes how long a complete construction, such as a fire door or a compartment wall, continues to hold fire back once it has taken hold. A product can be relevant to one, the other, both, or neither.

Where a classification is required

Whether an interior lining needs a specific reaction-to-fire class is set by the building's fire strategy for that location, informed by guidance such as Approved Document B — not by the product itself. Escape routes, protected corridors and certain public and higher-risk buildings commonly carry raised requirements; a project's fire engineer or building control adviser determines the class needed for a specific location.

What we currently publish

We do not currently publish fire classifications for our products. When independent test reports are commissioned and issued, they will be published here in full. We would rather say plainly that we don’t hold a report than imply a classification we cannot evidence.

It ranges from A1 (non-combustible) to F. It is not the same as fire resistance, which is about how long a construction such as a door or wall holds back fire once established.
